The 1911 Census recorded 5,842 people named Mooney in Ireland, about 0.133% of everyone living in the country at the time and the 129th most common surname overall. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 2,961 men and 2,878 women. (A small number, 3, had no sex recorded.)

Dublin was Mooney country: 28% of them (1,633 people) lived there in 1911. Next came Antrim (680), Offaly (394), Meath (337) and Down (321).

The average Mooney in 1911 was 29.7 years old, 29.6 for men and 29.9 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Mooney literacy in 1911
Of the Mooneys whose literacy was recorded, 77.3% could both read and write, 4.6% could read but not write, and 18% could do neither. The figures were much the same for men and women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (404), Patrick, James, Thomas and Michael; the same five names that topped the list nationally. For women it was Mary (456), followed by Bridget, Margaret, Annie and Catherine.

The most common entry on a Mooney's census form was "Scholar"; 19.3% (1,126) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (11.7%), general labourer (5.8%), farm labourer (4%) and domestic servant (3.2%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 16.5% of all Mooneys, followed by general labourers, domestic service and textiles & clothing.
What religion is Mooney?
Mooneys were predominantly Roman Catholic (89.6%). The remainder were mostly Presbyterian (4.5%), Anglican (4.5%), Methodist (0.4%) and Baptist (0.1%).
