The 1911 Census recorded 252 people named Mortimer in Ireland; roughly one in every 17,000 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 132 men and 119 women. (A small number, 1, had no sex recorded.)

Mayo had the largest share of Mortimers, 24.2% (61 people). Next came Dublin (39), Galway (34), Laois (22) and Antrim (15).

The average Mortimer in 1911 was 28.3 years old, 29.0 for men and 27.6 for women; a touch younger than the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Mortimer literacy in 1911
Of the Mortimers whose literacy was recorded, 74.5% could both read and write, 4.5% could read but not write, and 21% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 78% reading and writing against 70.7% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (15), Thomas, William, Patrick and George. For women it was Bridget (9), followed by Margaret, Mary, Catherine and Brigid.
Mortimer occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a Mortimer's census form was "Scholar"; 26.2% (66) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (20.6%), shopkeeper / shop assistant / dealer (3.2%), farm labourer (2%) and dressmaker / milliner (1.6%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 22.6% of all Mortimers, followed by retail & commerce, textiles & clothing and public service & defence.
What religion is Mortimer?
Most Mortimers, 68.3%, were Roman Catholic. The remainder were mostly Anglican (20.6%), Presbyterian (6.7%) and Methodist (4%).
