The Mugans were heavily concentrated in Mayo, home to 54.3% of them (44 people). Next came Roscommon (28), Louth (6) and Wicklow (3).

Women came out slightly ahead, 60% reading and writing against 57.8% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (8), Thomas, Patrick, Anthony and Martin. For women it was Mary (4), followed by Anne, Bridget, Maggie and Annie.

The most common entry on a Mugan's census form was "Scholar"; 35.8% (29) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (29.6%), shopkeeper / shop assistant / dealer (2.5%), farm labourer (1.2%) and gardener (1.2%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 32.1% of all Mugans, followed by retail & commerce.
