The 1911 Census recorded 360 people named Mulqueen in Ireland; roughly one in every 12,000 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 174 men and 186 women.

The Mulqueens were heavily concentrated in Limerick, home to 63.6% of them (229 people). Next came Clare (107), Louth (8), Dublin (5) and Kerry (4).

The average Mulqueen in 1911 was 26.6 years old, 26.7 for men and 26.4 for women; noticeably younger than the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Mulqueen literacy in 1911
Of the Mulqueens whose literacy was recorded, 77.2% could both read and write, 3.8% could read but not write, and 18.8% could do neither. Women came out slightly ahead, 79.1% reading and writing against 75% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.
Mulqueen common first names
The most common male names were John (29), Patrick, Michael, Thomas and James; the same five names that topped the list nationally. For women it was Mary (30), followed by Bridget, Margaret, Ellen and Catherine.
Mulqueen occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a Mulqueen's census form was "Scholar"; 23.3% (84) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (13.9%), general labourer (4.7%), domestic servant (3.3%) and farm labourer (3.1%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 17.2% of all Mulqueens, followed by domestic service, general labourers and retail & commerce.
What religion is Mulqueen?
Mulqueens were overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, 98.6% of them. The remainder were mostly Anglican (1.1%).
