That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Murphey literacy in 1911
Of the Murpheys whose literacy was recorded, 83.3% could both read and write, 3.7% could read but not write, and 13% could do neither. Women came out slightly ahead, 85.7% reading and writing against 81.8% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common occupation among Murpheys was farmer, 23.6% of them (13 people). Next came farm labourer (14.5%), laundress (7.3%), miner / quarryman (7.3%) and scholar / student (7.3%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 38.2% of all Murpheys, followed by domestic service, mining & quarrying and general labourers.

Murpheys were predominantly Roman Catholic (70.9%). The remainder were mostly Presbyterian (16.4%), Anglican (10.9%) and Methodist (1.8%).
