The 1911 Census recorded 373 people named Naughten in Ireland; roughly one in every 12,000 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 188 men and 185 women.

The Naughtens were heavily concentrated in Roscommon, home to 72.4% of them (270 people). Next came Galway (38), Westmeath (25), Mayo (18) and Clare (7).

The average Naughten in 1911 was 29.6 years old, 30.2 for men and 29.1 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Naughten literacy in 1911
Of the Naughtens whose literacy was recorded, 82.4% could both read and write, 3.8% could read but not write, and 13.8% could do neither. The figures were much the same for men and women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (34), Patrick, Michael, Thomas and Peter. For women it was Mary (40), followed by Bridget, Catherine, Kate and Margaret.
Naughten occupations in 1911
The most common occupation among Naughtens was farmer, 32.2% of them (120 people). Next came scholar / student (24.4%), farm labourer (2.1%), teacher (1.3%) and domestic servant (1.1%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 34.9% of all Naughtens, followed by domestic service, professional and building & construction.
What religion is Naughten?
Naughtens were overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, 99.2% of them. The remainder were mostly Anglican (0.5%).
