Of the Nealons whose literacy was recorded, 76.8% could both read and write, 1.8% could read but not write, and 21.5% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 79.9% reading and writing against 73.9% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (35), Michael, Patrick, Thomas and James; the same five names that topped the list nationally. For women it was Mary (39), followed by Bridget, Margaret, Catherine and Ellen.

The most common occupation among Nealons was farmer, 20.3% of them (87 people). Next came scholar / student (20.3%), general labourer (4.2%), farm labourer (2.6%) and domestic servant (2.1%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 23.1% of all Nealons, followed by general labourers, building & construction and textiles & clothing.

Nealons were overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, 94.4% of them. The remainder were mostly Anglican (1.6%).
