Women came out slightly ahead, 85.8% reading and writing against 80.2% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were Michael (19), John, Patrick, Thomas and James; the same five names that topped the list nationally. For women it was Bridget (12), followed by Mary, Catherine, Margaret and Anne.

The most common occupation among Neilans was farmer, 25.1% of them (61 people). Next came scholar / student (18.5%), general labourer (6.6%), domestic servant (3.3%) and knitter / lace worker (2.9%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 27.2% of all Neilans, followed by general labourers, domestic service and textiles & clothing.

Neilans were overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, 97.9% of them. The remainder were mostly Anglican (1.2%).
