The 1911 Census recorded 96 people named Nethery in Ireland; roughly one in every 46,000 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 44 men and 52 women.

The Netherys were heavily concentrated in Tyrone, home to 90.6% of them (87 people). Next came Antrim (5), Derry (2) and Tipperary (2).

The average Nethery in 1911 was 31.0 years old, 28.7 for men and 32.9 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Nethery literacy in 1911
Of the Netherys whose literacy was recorded, 89.5% could both read and write, 0% could read but not write, and 10.5% could do neither. Women came out slightly ahead, 94.1% reading and writing against 84.1% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were James (4), Alexander, Gibson, Gilbert Alexander and James Hill. For women it was Mary (7), followed by Bella Jane, Sarah, Margaret and Mary Jane.

The most common entry on a Nethery's census form was "Scholar"; 28.1% (27) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (27.1%), seamstress (5.2%), farm labourer (2.1%) and maid (2.1%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 29.2% of all Netherys, followed by textiles & clothing, domestic service and retail & commerce.
What religion is Nethery?
Netherys were predominantly Anglican (75%). The remainder were mostly Presbyterian (25%).
