The average Nevins in 1911 was 31.6 years old, 27.9 for men and 33.9 for women; slightly older than the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Nevins literacy in 1911
Of the Nevinses whose literacy was recorded, 74.5% could both read and write, 9.1% could read but not write, and 16.4% could do neither. Women came out slightly ahead, 77.1% reading and writing against 70% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were James (3), John, Patrick, Thomas and William. For women it was Mary (5), followed by Kate, Lizzie, Margaret and Bridget.

The most common entry on a Nevins's census form was "Scholar"; 16.7% (10) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were domestic servant (10%), farm labourer (5%), farmer (5%) and general labourer (5%). Grouped by sector, domestic service accounted for 11.7% of all Nevinses, followed by agriculture, textiles & clothing and general labourers.
What religion is Nevins?
Most Nevinses, 68.3%, were Roman Catholic. The remainder were mostly Presbyterian (16.7%) and Anglican (15%).
