The 1911 Census recorded 1,052 people named Newell in Ireland, about 0.024% of everyone living in the country at the time and the 756th most common surname overall. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 525 men and 526 women. (A small number, 1, had no sex recorded.)

Down was Newell country: 40.5% of them (426 people) lived there in 1911. Next came Galway (244), Antrim (115), Tyrone (75) and Mayo (60).

The average Newell in 1911 was 29.1 years old, 29.1 for men and 29.1 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Newell literacy in 1911
Of the Newells whose literacy was recorded, 77.1% could both read and write, 2.9% could read but not write, and 20% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 78.5% reading and writing against 75.7% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (61), James, Thomas, William and Michael. For women it was Mary (59), followed by Bridget, Annie, Margaret and Sarah.
Newell occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a Newell's census form was "Scholar"; 22.3% (235) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (14.5%), textile worker (2.9%), farm labourer (2.7%) and general labourer (2.5%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 17.5% of all Newells, followed by textiles & clothing, domestic service and retail & commerce.
What religion is Newell?
The largest religious group among Newells was Roman Catholic, at 35%. The remainder were mostly Presbyterian (32%), Anglican (27.9%), Methodist (3.1%) and Quaker (0.6%).
