The 1911 Census recorded 83 people named Newport in Ireland; roughly one in every 53,000 people carried the name. There were noticeably more men than women recorded: 47 men to 35 women. (A small number, 1, had no sex recorded.)

The Newports were heavily concentrated in Wexford, home to 60.2% of them (50 people). Next came Dublin (18), Armagh (5), Kilkenny (4) and Tipperary (3).
Newport average age in 1911
The average Newport in 1911 was 29.2 years old, 28.2 for men and 30.4 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Newport literacy in 1911
Of the Newports whose literacy was recorded, 84.2% could both read and write, 0% could read but not write, and 15.8% could do neither. Women came out slightly ahead, 85.3% reading and writing against 83.3% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (7), Patrick, Thomas, William and Edward. For women it was Mary (7), followed by Annie, Elizabeth, Kathleen and Maggie.

The most common entry on a Newport's census form was "Scholar"; 22.9% (19) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (14.5%), farm labourer (7.2%), agent / manager (4.8%) and domestic servant (3.6%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 21.7% of all Newports, followed by domestic service, retail & commerce and textiles & clothing.
What religion is Newport?
Newports were predominantly Roman Catholic (78.3%). The remainder were mostly Anglican (14.5%) and Methodist (6%).
