The 1911 Census recorded 461 people named Neylon in Ireland; roughly one in every 9,500 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 235 men and 225 women. (A small number, 1, had no sex recorded.)

The Neylons were heavily concentrated in Clare, home to 87.9% of them (405 people). Next came Limerick (14), Cork (9), Leitrim (8) and Longford (6).

The average Neylon in 1911 was 29.5 years old, 31.9 for men and 27.1 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Neylon literacy in 1911
Of the Neylons whose literacy was recorded, 78.9% could both read and write, 3.5% could read but not write, and 17.6% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 82.7% reading and writing against 74.8% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (42), Michael, Patrick, James and Thomas; the same five names that topped the list nationally. For women it was Mary (44), followed by Bridget, Margaret, Catherine and Anne.

The most common occupation among Neylons was farmer, 30.2% of them (139 people). Next came scholar / student (20.8%), farm labourer (2.8%), general labourer (2.8%) and retired / pensioner (1.7%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 33.2% of all Neylons, followed by general labourers, building & construction and retired & pensioners.
