Norman in 1911 Ireland
The 1911 Census recorded 228 people named Norman in Ireland; roughly one in every 19,000 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 104 men and 121 women. (A small number, 3, had no sex recorded.)
Counties with Norman in Ireland
The Normans were heavily concentrated in Dublin, home to 51.3% of them (117 people). Next came Westmeath (15), Antrim (14), Cork (14) and Galway (12).
Norman average age in 1911
The average Norman in 1911 was 29.8 years old, 30.1 for men and 29.7 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Norman literacy in 1911
Of the Normans whose literacy was recorded, 80.6% could both read and write, 5.6% could read but not write, and 13.9% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 81.6% reading and writing against 79.5% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.
Norman common first names
The most common male names were John (11), William, James, George and Thomas. For women it was Mary (11), followed by Ellen, Bridget, Catherine and Elizabeth.
Norman occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a Norman's census form was "Scholar"; 20.2% (46) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were general labourer (7.9%), shopkeeper / shop assistant / dealer (4.4%), domestic servant (3.9%) and no occupation / dependent (2.6%). Grouped by sector, general labourers accounted for 7.9% of all Normans, followed by domestic service, retail & commerce and professional.
What religion is Norman?
Most Normans, 58.3%, were Roman Catholic. The remainder were mostly Anglican (32.9%), Baptist (1.3%), Methodist (1.3%) and Presbyterian (1.3%).
