North in 1911 Ireland
The 1911 Census recorded 245 people named North in Ireland; roughly one in every 18,000 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 120 men and 124 women. (A small number, 1, had no sex recorded.)
Counties with North in Ireland
Dublin was North country: 33.5% of them (82 people) lived there in 1911. Next came Cavan (48), Down (21), Westmeath (17) and Cork (15).
North average age in 1911
The average North in 1911 was 27.7 years old, 27.2 for men and 28.2 for women; a touch younger than the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
North literacy in 1911
Of the Norths whose literacy was recorded, 81.6% could both read and write, 2.5% could read but not write, and 15.9% could do neither. The figures were much the same for men and women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.
North common first names
The most common male names were John (12), James, Thomas, William and Patrick. For women it was Mary (10), followed by Elizabeth, Margaret, Bridget and Maria.
North occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a North's census form was "Scholar"; 19.2% (47) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farm labourer (5.7%), farmer (4.9%), general labourer (4.5%) and domestic servant (3.7%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 11% of all Norths, followed by domestic service, retail & commerce and general labourers.
What religion is North?
The largest religious group among Norths was Roman Catholic, at 45.3%. The remainder were mostly Anglican (42.9%), Methodist (7.8%), Non-Conformist (3.3%) and Congregationalist (0.4%).
