The 1911 Census recorded 421 people named O in Ireland; roughly one in every 10,000 people carried the name. There were noticeably more men than women recorded: 261 men to 105 women. (A small number, 55, had no sex recorded.)
Counties with O in Ireland
Dublin was O country: 27.1% of them (114 people) lived there in 1911. Next came Cork (63), Antrim (37), Kildare (32) and Tipperary (28).
O average age in 1911
The average O in 1911 was 33.4 years old, 31.9 for men and 41.1 for women; noticeably older than the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
O literacy in 1911
Of the Os whose literacy was recorded, 79.9% could both read and write, 3% could read but not write, and 17% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 87.4% reading and writing against 50% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.
O common first names
The most common male names were J (60), P, W, T and A. For women it was M (37), followed by E, J, L and A.
O occupations in 1911
The most common occupation among Os was general labourer, 20% of them (84 people). Next came farmer (7.8%), domestic servant (6.4%), scholar / student (5.9%) and carter / driver / groom (4.3%). Grouped by sector, general labourers accounted for 20% of all Os, followed by agriculture, transport and domestic service.
What religion is O?
Most Os, 53.7%, were Roman Catholic. The remainder were mostly Anglican (32.8%), Presbyterian (7.8%), Methodist (1.4%) and Baptist (0.2%).
