The 1911 Census recorded 394 people named OAtes in Ireland; roughly one in every 11,000 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 195 men and 199 women.

Roscommon was OAtes country: 36% of them (142 people) lived there in 1911. Next came Sligo (77), Dublin (42), Longford (23) and Waterford (22).

The average OAtes in 1911 was 31.0 years old, 32.0 for men and 30.1 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
OAtes literacy in 1911
Of the OAteses whose literacy was recorded, 77.3% could both read and write, 2.6% could read but not write, and 20.1% could do neither. The figures were much the same for men and women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.
OAtes common first names
The most common male names were John (33), James, Michael, Thomas and Patrick; the same five names that topped the list nationally. For women it was Mary (32), followed by Bridget, Ellen, Mary Anne and Kate.
OAtes occupations in 1911
The most common entry on an OAtes's census form was "Scholar"; 20.3% (80) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (20.1%), farm labourer (4.6%), domestic servant (4.1%) and general labourer (3.6%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 24.6% of all OAteses, followed by domestic service, general labourers and textiles & clothing.
What religion is OAtes?
OAteses were overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, 93.1% of them. The remainder were mostly Anglican (4.8%), Presbyterian (0.5%), Methodist (0.3%) and No Religion (0.3%).
