The 1911 Census recorded 4,286 people named O'Hara in Ireland, about 0.098% of everyone living in the country at the time and the 196th most common surname overall. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 2,109 men and 2,172 women. (A small number, 5, had no sex recorded.)
Counties with O'Hara in Ireland
Antrim had the largest share of O'Haras, 17.4% (747 people). Next came Sligo (673), Dublin (475), Mayo (359) and Leitrim (223).
O'Hara average age in 1911
The average O'Hara in 1911 was 29.5 years old, 29.3 for men and 29.7 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
O'Hara literacy in 1911
Of the O'Haras whose literacy was recorded, 75.2% could both read and write, 5.6% could read but not write, and 19.2% could do neither. The figures were much the same for men and women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.
O'Hara common first names
The most common male names were John (313), James, Patrick, Michael and Thomas; the same five names that topped the list nationally. For women it was Mary (297), followed by Bridget, Ellen, Margaret and Annie; matching the national top five exactly.
O'Hara occupations in 1911
The most common entry on an O'Hara's census form was "Scholar"; 20.4% (873) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (14.8%), general labourer (5.1%), farm labourer (4.3%) and textile worker (3.4%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 19.6% of all O'Haras, followed by general labourers, textiles & clothing and domestic service.
What religion is O'Hara?
O'Haras were predominantly Roman Catholic (87.3%). The remainder were mostly Presbyterian (3.9%), Anglican (3.8%), Methodist (0.2%) and Unitarian (0.1%).
