The 1911 Census recorded 2,216 people named O'Hare in Ireland, about 0.051% of everyone living in the country at the time and the 396th most common surname overall. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 1,079 men and 1,135 women. (A small number, 2, had no sex recorded.)

Down was O'Hare country: 48.6% of them (1,078 people) lived there in 1911. Next came Armagh (442), Louth (238), Antrim (195) and Dublin (113).

The average O'Hare in 1911 was 29.8 years old, 28.9 for men and 30.6 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
O'Hare literacy in 1911
Of the O'Hares whose literacy was recorded, 72.9% could both read and write, 4.8% could read but not write, and 22.3% could do neither. The figures were much the same for men and women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (133), Patrick, James, Michael and Thomas; the same five names that topped the list nationally. For women it was Mary (153), followed by Bridget, Catherine, Annie and Margaret.
O'Hare occupations in 1911
The most common entry on an O'Hare's census form was "Scholar"; 18.7% (414) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (15.7%), textile worker (4%), farm labourer (3.5%) and general labourer (2.9%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 19.7% of all O'Hares, followed by textiles & clothing, domestic service and retail & commerce.
What religion is O'Hare?
O'Hares were overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, 98% of them. The remainder were mostly Anglican (1.3%) and Presbyterian (0.2%).
