Men came out slightly ahead, 75.2% reading and writing against 72.9% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (144), Patrick, Michael, James and Thomas; the same five names that topped the list nationally. For women it was Mary (185), followed by Bridget, Annie, Catherine and Anne.

Next came scholar / student (21.4%), general labourer (2.4%), shopkeeper / shop assistant / dealer (1.9%) and farm labourer (1.8%).
