ORgan in 1911 Ireland

Counties with ORgan in Ireland

Clare was ORgan country: 37.9% of them (44 people) lived there in 1911. Next came Waterford (35), Tipperary (16), Limerick (12) and Cork (4).

ORgan average age in 1911

The average ORgan in 1911 was 28.4 years old, 23.9 for men and 33.2 for women; a touch younger than the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.

ORgan literacy in 1911

Of the ORgans whose literacy was recorded, 83% could both read and write, 2.7% could read but not write, and 14.3% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 86.2% reading and writing against 79.6% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 15.5% of all ORgans, followed by general labourers, domestic service and textiles & clothing.
