The 1911 Census recorded 2,114 people named P in Ireland, about 0.048% of everyone living in the country at the time and the 420th most common surname overall. There were noticeably more men than women recorded: 1,355 men to 532 women. (A small number, 227, had no sex recorded.)
Counties with P in Ireland
Dublin was P country: 25.4% of them (537 people) lived there in 1911. Next came Kildare (264), Cork (237), Antrim (158) and Tipperary (129).
P average age in 1911
The average P in 1911 was 34.4 years old, 32.8 for men and 42.6 for women; noticeably older than the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
P literacy in 1911
Of the Ps whose literacy was recorded, 82.6% could both read and write, 3.2% could read but not write, and 14.2% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 88.3% reading and writing against 59.5% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.
P common first names
The most common male names were J (274), W, A, M and P. For women it was M (152), followed by E, A, J and B.
P occupations in 1911
The most common occupation among Ps was general labourer, 18.5% of them (391 people). Next came farmer (7.2%), domestic servant (6.3%), scholar / student (5.4%) and farm labourer (3.4%). Grouped by sector, general labourers accounted for 18.5% of all Ps, followed by agriculture, domestic service and transport.
What religion is P?
The largest religious group among Ps was Roman Catholic, at 44%. The remainder were mostly Anglican (40.3%), Presbyterian (7.9%), Methodist (1.8%) and Baptist (0.2%).
