Parkinson in 1911 Ireland
The 1911 Census recorded 622 people named Parkinson in Ireland; roughly one in every 7,100 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 309 men and 312 women. (A small number, 1, had no sex recorded.)

Antrim was Parkinson country: 25.6% of them (159 people) lived there in 1911. Next came Down (110), Dublin (104), Laois (76) and Kerry (37).
Parkinson average age in 1911
The average Parkinson in 1911 was 30.0 years old, 29.0 for men and 30.9 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Parkinson literacy in 1911
Of the Parkinsons whose literacy was recorded, 81.1% could both read and write, 2.5% could read but not write, and 16.4% could do neither. The figures were much the same for men and women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.
Parkinson common first names
The most common male names were James (37), John, William, Joseph and Edward. For women it was Mary (34), followed by Annie, Ellen, Bridget and Elizabeth.
Parkinson occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a Parkinson's census form was "Scholar"; 17.5% (109) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (10.1%), general labourer (4.2%), shopkeeper / shop assistant / dealer (3.1%) and farm labourer (2.9%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 13.8% of all Parkinsons, followed by textiles & clothing, retail & commerce and general labourers.
What religion is Parkinson?
The largest religious group among Parkinsons was Anglican, at 45.3%. The remainder were mostly Roman Catholic (36%), Presbyterian (10.9%), Methodist (2.7%) and Plymouth Brethren (2.1%).
