That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. Of the Parles whose literacy was recorded, 79.5% could both read and write, 6.1% could read but not write, and 14.4% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 81.2% reading and writing against 77.7% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (28), Patrick, James, William and Nicholas. For women it was Mary (27), followed by Ellen, Margaret, Bridget and Anne.

The most common occupation among Parles was farmer, 18.1% of them (49 people). Next came scholar / student (16.2%), general labourer (5.5%), farm labourer (5.2%) and domestic servant (4.8%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 23.6% of all Parles, followed by domestic service, general labourers and building & construction.
