The 1911 Census recorded 253 people named Paterson in Ireland; roughly one in every 17,000 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 116 men and 136 women. (A small number, 1, had no sex recorded.)

Antrim had the largest share of Patersons, 21.3% (54 people). Next came Down (49), Cork (40), Dublin (27) and Armagh (17).

The average Paterson in 1911 was 30.8 years old, 28.1 for men and 33.1 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Paterson literacy in 1911
Of the Patersons whose literacy was recorded, 84.3% could both read and write, 4.7% could read but not write, and 11.1% could do neither. Women came out slightly ahead, 86% reading and writing against 82.1% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (16), William, James, Alexander and Joseph. For women it was Annie (11), followed by Mary, Sarah, Elizabeth and Margaret.

The most common entry on a Paterson's census form was "Scholar"; 16.6% (42) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were domestic servant (4.7%), general labourer (4.3%), textile worker (4.3%) and metal worker / engineer (4%). Grouped by sector, textiles & clothing accounted for 7.1% of all Patersons, followed by domestic service, metal & engineering and general labourers.
What religion is Paterson?
The largest religious group among Patersons was Anglican, at 47.8%. The remainder were mostly Presbyterian (34%), Roman Catholic (7.9%), Methodist (5.5%) and Congregationalist (2%).
