Phair in 1911 Ireland
The 1911 Census recorded 297 people named Phair in Ireland; roughly one in every 15,000 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 150 men and 147 women.

Fermanagh was Phair country: 34.7% of them (103 people) lived there in 1911. Next came Cavan (62), Cork (32), Dublin (17) and Leitrim (15).
Phair average age in 1911
The average Phair in 1911 was 30.1 years old, 29.5 for men and 30.8 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Phair literacy in 1911
Of the Phairs whose literacy was recorded, 79.1% could both read and write, 5.7% could read but not write, and 15.2% could do neither. The figures were much the same for men and women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.
Phair common first names
The most common male names were William (18), John, James, Robert and Thomas. For women it was Margaret (13), followed by Mary Jane, Elizabeth, Mary and Annie.
Phair occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a Phair's census form was "Scholar"; 19.5% (58) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (14.8%), farm labourer (4.7%), general labourer (4%) and domestic servant (3%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 20.2% of all Phairs, followed by domestic service, general labourers and retail & commerce.
What religion is Phair?
Phairs were predominantly Anglican (77.4%). The remainder were mostly Roman Catholic (16.8%), Methodist (3%) and Presbyterian (2%).
