Philips in 1911 Ireland
The 1911 Census recorded 327 people named Philips in Ireland; roughly one in every 13,000 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 170 men and 156 women. (A small number, 1, had no sex recorded.)

Mayo had the largest share of Philipses, 14.7% (48 people). Next came Antrim (42), Dublin (34), Roscommon (29) and Derry (18).

The average Philips in 1911 was 32.1 years old, 30.0 for men and 34.4 for women; slightly older than the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Philips literacy in 1911
Of the Philipses whose literacy was recorded, 69.1% could both read and write, 4.8% could read but not write, and 26% could do neither. The figures were much the same for men and women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were James (19), Thomas, John, Michael and Patrick; the same five names that topped the list nationally. For women it was Mary (25), followed by Bridget, Margaret, Elizabeth and Anne.

The most common occupation among Philipses was farmer, 15.9% of them (52 people). Next came scholar / student (12.8%), general labourer (7%), domestic servant (6.4%) and farm labourer (5.2%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 23.2% of all Philipses, followed by domestic service, general labourers and textiles & clothing.

Philipses were predominantly Roman Catholic (70.9%). The remainder were mostly Anglican (18%), Presbyterian (5.5%), Non-Conformist (1.8%) and Baptist (1.2%).
