The 1911 Census recorded 362 people named Poole in Ireland; roughly one in every 12,000 people carried the name. There were noticeably more women than men recorded: 205 women to 157 men.

Dublin had the largest share of Pooles, 24.3% (88 people). Next came Down (73), Wexford (35), Antrim (26) and Waterford (25).

The average Poole in 1911 was 27.2 years old, 26.9 for men and 27.5 for women; a touch younger than the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Poole literacy in 1911
Of the Pooles whose literacy was recorded, 80.1% could both read and write, 3.7% could read but not write, and 16.2% could do neither. The figures were much the same for men and women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (18), William, Joseph, James and Patrick. For women it was Mary (18), followed by Margaret, Ellen, Elizabeth and Annie.

The most common entry on a Poole's census form was "Scholar"; 19.6% (71) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (10.5%), textile worker (3.6%), general labourer (3%) and shopkeeper / shop assistant / dealer (3%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 12.4% of all Pooles, followed by retail & commerce, textiles & clothing and general labourers.
What religion is Poole?
The largest religious group among Pooles was Roman Catholic, at 39.2%. The remainder were mostly Anglican (37%), Presbyterian (15.2%), Methodist (5.8%) and Quaker (1.9%).
