The 1911 Census recorded 216 people named Poots in Ireland; roughly one in every 20,000 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 108 men and 108 women.

The Pootses were heavily concentrated in Down, home to 61.1% of them (132 people). Next came Antrim (55), Dublin (10), Monaghan (10) and Armagh (9).

That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.

Of the Pootses whose literacy was recorded, 74.9% could both read and write, 4.3% could read but not write, and 20.8% could do neither. The figures were much the same for men and women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were Robert (17), John, James, Samuel and Adam. For women it was Mary (8), followed by Margaret, Ellen, Lizzie and Martha.

The most common entry on a Poots's census form was "Scholar"; 23.6% (51) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (14.8%), general labourer (6%), textile worker (6%) and shopkeeper / shop assistant / dealer (3.7%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 15.3% of all Pootses, followed by textiles & clothing, general labourers and retail & commerce.
What religion is Poots?
Most Pootses, 53.2%, were Presbyterian. The remainder were mostly Anglican (34.3%), Plymouth Brethren (5.1%), Non-Conformist (2.3%) and Baptist (1.4%).
