Porter in 1911 Ireland
The 1911 Census recorded 2,851 people named Porter in Ireland, about 0.065% of everyone living in the country at the time and the 310th most common surname overall. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 1,385 men and 1,464 women. (A small number, 2, had no sex recorded.)
Counties with Porter in Ireland
Antrim had the largest share of Porters, 20.9% (597 people). Next came Donegal (445), Down (391), Derry (334) and Tyrone (267).
Porter average age in 1911
The average Porter in 1911 was 29.1 years old, 28.6 for men and 29.6 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Porter literacy in 1911
Of the Porters whose literacy was recorded, 80.2% could both read and write, 3.9% could read but not write, and 15.9% could do neither. Women came out slightly ahead, 81.2% reading and writing against 79.1% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.
Porter common first names
The most common male names were John (139), William, James, Robert and Thomas. For women it was Mary (94), followed by Sarah, Annie, Elizabeth and Jane.
Porter occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a Porter's census form was "Scholar"; 19.2% (547) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (13.2%), general labourer (4.9%), textile worker (3.5%) and farm labourer (3%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 16.6% of all Porters, followed by textiles & clothing, general labourers and domestic service.
What religion is Porter?
The largest religious group among Porters was Presbyterian, at 40.4%. The remainder were mostly Anglican (30.9%), Roman Catholic (19.4%), Methodist (4.9%) and Baptist (1.3%).
