Of the Pottses whose literacy was recorded, 81.6% could both read and write, 3.4% could read but not write, and 15% could do neither. Women came out slightly ahead, 83.2% reading and writing against 79.5% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (16), Thomas, James, William and Joseph. For women it was Mary (17), followed by Margaret, Ellen, Elizabeth and Annie.

The most common entry on a Potts's census form was "Scholar"; 20.7% (58) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (9.6%), general labourer (6.4%), textile worker (3.9%) and domestic servant (2.9%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 11.4% of all Pottses, followed by textiles & clothing, general labourers and domestic service.

The largest religious group among Pottses was Presbyterian, at 38.6%. The remainder were mostly Roman Catholic (31.1%), Anglican (22.1%), Methodist (5%) and Non-Conformist (1.4%).
