Preston in 1911 Ireland
The 1911 Census recorded 737 people named Preston in Ireland; roughly one in every 6,000 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 350 men and 386 women. (A small number, 1, had no sex recorded.)

Antrim had the largest share of Prestons, 19.9% (147 people). Next came Armagh (118), Down (85), Dublin (83) and Cork (52).

The average Preston in 1911 was 29.7 years old, 28.5 for men and 30.8 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Preston literacy in 1911
Of the Prestons whose literacy was recorded, 76.8% could both read and write, 4.4% could read but not write, and 18.8% could do neither. Women came out slightly ahead, 77.8% reading and writing against 75.7% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.
Preston common first names
The most common male names were William (38), Thomas, James, John and Joseph. For women it was Mary (30), followed by Margaret, Elizabeth, Annie and Bridget.
Preston occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a Preston's census form was "Scholar"; 17.2% (127) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (8.8%), farm labourer (4.5%), textile worker (3.7%) and general labourer (3.4%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 14.1% of all Prestons, followed by textiles & clothing, domestic service and retail & commerce.
What religion is Preston?
The largest religious group among Prestons was Anglican, at 49.1%. The remainder were mostly Roman Catholic (24%), Presbyterian (16.7%), Methodist (3.1%) and Baptist (2%).
