The Priestlys were heavily concentrated in Down, home to 53.9% of them (55 people). Next came Armagh (14), Antrim (13), Wicklow (9) and Dublin (5).

The average Priestly in 1911 was 27.8 years old, 26.2 for men and 29.1 for women; a touch younger than the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Priestly literacy in 1911
Of the Priestlys whose literacy was recorded, 81.9% could both read and write, 6.4% could read but not write, and 11.7% could do neither. The figures were much the same for men and women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (6), James, Samuel, William and Joseph. For women it was Eliza (4), followed by Margaret, Martha, Mary and Sarah.
Priestly occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a Priestly's census form was "Scholar"; 20.6% (21) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were textile worker (11.8%), seamstress (7.8%), farm labourer (5.9%) and farmer (4.9%). Grouped by sector, textiles & clothing accounted for 21.6% of all Priestlys, followed by agriculture, general labourers and domestic service.
What religion is Priestly?
Most Priestlys, 64.7%, were Presbyterian. The remainder were mostly Anglican (22.5%) and Roman Catholic (11.8%).
