The 1911 Census recorded 739 people named Prior in Ireland; roughly one in every 5,900 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 370 men and 369 women.

That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Prior literacy in 1911
Of the Priors whose literacy was recorded, 73.8% could both read and write, 5.5% could read but not write, and 20.7% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 75.9% reading and writing against 71.6% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were Patrick (57), John, Thomas, James and Hugh. For women it was Mary (51), followed by Bridget, Mary Anne, Anne and Margaret.
Prior occupations in 1911
The most common occupation among Priors was farmer, 27.3% of them (202 people). Next came scholar / student (19.9%), farm labourer (3.9%), general labourer (3.9%) and domestic servant (2.2%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 31.4% of all Priors, followed by domestic service, general labourers and textiles & clothing.
What religion is Prior?
Priors were overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, 96.1% of them. The remainder were mostly Anglican (3.2%).
