The 1911 Census recorded 61 people named Prout in Ireland; roughly one in every 72,000 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 29 men and 32 women.

The Prouts were heavily concentrated in Tipperary, home to 65.6% of them (40 people). Next came Kilkenny (9), Antrim (6), Waterford (3) and Dublin (1).

The average Prout in 1911 was 38.1 years old, 41.5 for men and 35.0 for women; noticeably older than the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.

Of the Prouts whose literacy was recorded, 81% could both read and write, 1.7% could read but not write, and 17.2% could do neither. Women came out slightly ahead, 83.9% reading and writing against 77.8% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (8), Michael, James, William and Robert. For women it was Mary (9), followed by Catherine, Ellen, Margaret and Alice.
Prout occupations in 1911
The most common occupation among Prouts was farmer, 16.4% of them (10 people). Next came scholar / student (13.1%), general labourer (11.5%), other professional (8.2%) and farm labourer (4.9%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 21.3% of all Prouts, followed by general labourers, professional and domestic service.
What religion is Prout?
Prouts were predominantly Roman Catholic (85.2%). The remainder were mostly Methodist (9.8%).
