The average Purser in 1911 was 29.4 years old, 30.0 for men and 29.0 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Purser literacy in 1911
Of the Pursers whose literacy was recorded, 85.1% could both read and write, 0% could read but not write, and 14.9% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 88.2% reading and writing against 82.5% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.
Purser common first names
The most common male names were John (5), Richard, William, Fredrick and Henry. For women it was Sarah (4), followed by Edith, Elizabeth, Esther and Martha.
Purser occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a Purser's census form was "Scholar"; 18.2% (14) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were blacksmith / smith (6.5%), teacher (3.9%), carter / driver / groom (2.6%) and clerk / office worker (2.6%). Grouped by sector, metal & engineering accounted for 7.8% of all Pursers, followed by professional, agriculture and clerical & administration.
What religion is Purser?
Pursers were overwhelmingly Anglican, 93.5% of them. The remainder were mostly Methodist (5.2%) and Roman Catholic (1.3%).
