Q in 1911 Ireland
The 1911 Census recorded 462 people named Q in Ireland; roughly one in every 9,500 people carried the name. There were noticeably more men than women recorded: 267 men to 178 women. (A small number, 17, had no sex recorded.)
Counties with Q in Ireland
Dublin had the largest share of Qs, 17.5% (81 people). Next came Cork (39), Galway (39), Limerick (32) and Antrim (27).

Q average age in 1911
The average Q in 1911 was 41.4 years old, 41.0 for men and 43.6 for women; noticeably older than the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Q literacy in 1911
Of the Qs whose literacy was recorded, 68.3% could both read and write, 6.4% could read but not write, and 25.3% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 77.7% reading and writing against 52.5% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.
Q common first names
The most common male names were J (65), P, M, T and W. For women it was M (61), followed by B, E, J and C.
Q occupations in 1911
The most common occupation among Qs was general labourer, 22.5% of them (104 people). Next came farmer (14.1%), domestic servant (13.6%), scholar / student (8%) and farm labourer (3.5%). Grouped by sector, general labourers accounted for 22.5% of all Qs, followed by agriculture, domestic service and textiles & clothing.
What religion is Q?
Qs were predominantly Roman Catholic (85.9%). The remainder were mostly Anglican (6.3%), Methodist (0.9%), Presbyterian (0.6%) and Protestant (0.2%).
