Quin in 1911 Ireland
The 1911 Census recorded 604 people named Quin in Ireland; roughly one in every 7,300 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 289 men and 314 women. (A small number, 1, had no sex recorded.)

Limerick had the largest share of Quins, 16.2% (98 people). Next came Clare (74), Tyrone (70), Dublin (65) and Antrim (48).
Quin average age in 1911
The average Quin in 1911 was 30.4 years old, 30.7 for men and 30.2 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Quin literacy in 1911
Of the Quins whose literacy was recorded, 81.9% could both read and write, 3.2% could read but not write, and 14.9% could do neither. The figures were much the same for men and women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.
Quin common first names
The most common male names were John (38), Michael, James, Patrick and Thomas; the same five names that topped the list nationally. For women it was Mary (51), followed by Margaret, Ellen, Bridget and Elizabeth.
Quin occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a Quin's census form was "Scholar"; 20.2% (122) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (11.3%), domestic servant (7.5%), farm labourer (3.8%) and general labourer (2.2%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 16.1% of all Quins, followed by domestic service, textiles & clothing and professional.
What religion is Quin?
Quins were predominantly Roman Catholic (79%). The remainder were mostly Anglican (19.9%) and Presbyterian (1%).
