The 1911 Census recorded 2,192 people named Quinlan in Ireland, about 0.05% of everyone living in the country at the time and the 406th most common surname overall. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 1,100 men and 1,085 women. (A small number, 7, had no sex recorded.)

Tipperary was Quinlan country: 27.1% of them (594 people) lived there in 1911. Next came Cork (438), Kerry (230), Waterford (219) and Limerick (194).

The average Quinlan in 1911 was 31.4 years old, 31.3 for men and 31.5 for women; slightly older than the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Quinlan literacy in 1911
Of the Quinlans whose literacy was recorded, 81% could both read and write, 2.7% could read but not write, and 16.3% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 83.5% reading and writing against 78.4% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (172), Patrick, Michael, Thomas and James; the same five names that topped the list nationally. For women it was Mary (218), followed by Bridget, Margaret, Ellen and Catherine.

The most common entry on a Quinlan's census form was "Scholar"; 19.1% (418) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (17.4%), farm labourer (5.8%), general labourer (4.4%) and domestic servant (2.7%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 24.4% of all Quinlans, followed by domestic service, general labourers and retail & commerce.
What religion is Quinlan?
Quinlans were overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, 98.2% of them. The remainder were mostly Anglican (1.1%).
