The 1911 Census recorded 15,937 people named Quinn in Ireland, about 0.364% of everyone living in the country at the time and the 19th most common surname overall. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 7,933 men and 7,987 women. (A small number, 17, had no sex recorded.)
Counties with Quinn in Ireland
Tyrone had the largest share of Quinns, 13.5% (2,146 people). Next came Dublin (1,523), Down (1,181), Antrim (1,132) and Galway (1,022).
Quinn average age in 1911
The average Quinn in 1911 was 30.4 years old, 29.8 for men and 31.0 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Quinn literacy in 1911
Of the Quinns whose literacy was recorded, 74% could both read and write, 5% could read but not write, and 21% could do neither. The figures were much the same for men and women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.
Quinn common first names
The most common male names were John (1,143), Patrick, James, Michael and Thomas; the same five names that topped the list nationally. For women it was Mary (1,231), followed by Bridget, Margaret, Catherine and Annie.
Quinn occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a Quinn's census form was "Scholar"; 19.4% (3,089) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (17.4%), farm labourer (4.3%), general labourer (4%) and textile worker (2.6%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 22.2% of all Quinns, followed by textiles & clothing, general labourers and domestic service.
What religion is Quinn?
Quinns were overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, 91.2% of them. The remainder were mostly Anglican (4.4%), Presbyterian (2.4%), Methodist (0.5%) and Plymouth Brethren (0.2%).
