Quirk in 1911 Ireland
The 1911 Census recorded 536 people named Quirk in Ireland; roughly one in every 8,200 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 255 men and 280 women. (A small number, 1, had no sex recorded.)
Counties with Quirk in Ireland
Wexford had the largest share of Quirks, 21.3% (114 people). Next came Cork (111), Dublin (75), Kerry (54) and Tipperary (42).
Quirk average age in 1911
The average Quirk in 1911 was 28.5 years old, 28.7 for men and 28.4 for women; a touch younger than the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Quirk literacy in 1911
Of the Quirks whose literacy was recorded, 75.7% could both read and write, 4.3% could read but not write, and 20% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 79.3% reading and writing against 72.4% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.
Quirk common first names
The most common male names were John (41), Patrick, Thomas, James and William. For women it was Mary (57), followed by Ellen, Margaret, Bridget and Elizabeth.
Quirk occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a Quirk's census form was "Scholar"; 19% (102) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (10.6%), general labourer (7.5%), farm labourer (5%) and domestic servant (4.5%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 16.4% of all Quirks, followed by general labourers, domestic service and building & construction.
What religion is Quirk?
Quirks were overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, 97% of them. The remainder were mostly Anglican (2.2%) and Presbyterian (0.2%).
