The 1911 Census recorded 1,480 people named Rainey in Ireland, about 0.034% of everyone living in the country at the time and the 582nd most common surname overall. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 710 men and 769 women. (A small number, 1, had no sex recorded.)
Counties with Rainey in Ireland
The Raineys were heavily concentrated in Antrim, home to 55.9% of them (827 people). Next came Down (314), Armagh (95), Tyrone (85) and Derry (38).
Rainey average age in 1911
The average Rainey in 1911 was 29.3 years old, 28.9 for men and 29.7 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Rainey literacy in 1911
Of the Raineys whose literacy was recorded, 79.3% could both read and write, 4.9% could read but not write, and 15.8% could do neither. The figures were much the same for men and women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were James (79), John, William, Robert and Thomas. For women it was Mary (78), followed by Margaret, Sarah, Elizabeth and Maggie.
Rainey occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a Rainey's census form was "Scholar"; 19.8% (293) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were textile worker (9.3%), farmer (8.6%), general labourer (4.8%) and farm labourer (3%). Grouped by sector, textiles & clothing accounted for 12.2% of all Raineys, followed by agriculture, general labourers and domestic service.
What religion is Rainey?
Most Raineys, 51.4%, were Presbyterian. The remainder were mostly Anglican (21.4%), Roman Catholic (15.6%), Methodist (5.5%) and Baptist (1.6%).
