The 1911 Census recorded 176 people named Rath in Ireland; roughly one in every 25,000 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 95 men and 81 women.

Louth was Rath country: 42.6% of them (75 people) lived there in 1911. Next came Wexford (60), Dublin (28), Meath (5) and Antrim (4).

The average Rath in 1911 was 29.2 years old, 28.7 for men and 29.7 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Rath literacy in 1911
Of the Raths whose literacy was recorded, 80.6% could both read and write, 6.5% could read but not write, and 12.9% could do neither. The figures were much the same for men and women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.
Rath common first names
The most common male names were Patrick (22), James, Thomas, John and Joseph. For women it was Mary (15), followed by Catherine, Maggie, Margaret and Bridget.
Rath occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a Rath's census form was "Scholar"; 21% (37) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (14.8%), farm labourer (6.2%), fisherman (4.5%) and general labourer (3.4%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 21% of all Raths, followed by domestic service, fishing and general labourers.
What religion is Rath?
Raths were predominantly Roman Catholic (82.4%). The remainder were mostly Anglican (11.4%).
