Real in 1911 Ireland
The 1911 Census recorded 92 people named Real in Ireland; roughly one in every 48,000 people carried the name. There were noticeably more men than women recorded: 54 men to 38 women.
Counties with Real in Ireland
The Reals were heavily concentrated in Limerick, home to 66.3% of them (61 people). Next came Kerry (18), Clare (6), Tipperary (5) and Down (1).
Real average age in 1911
The average Real in 1911 was 33.3 years old, 32.3 for men and 34.7 for women; noticeably older than the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Real literacy in 1911
Of the Reals whose literacy was recorded, 76.7% could both read and write, 4.7% could read but not write, and 18.6% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 79.6% reading and writing against 73% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.
Real common first names
The most common male names were John (11), Michael, Patrick, Thomas and Edmond. For women it was Bridget (6), followed by Ellen, Mary, Johanna and Alice.
Real occupations in 1911
The most common occupation among Reals was farmer, 16.3% of them (15 people). Next came general labourer (10.9%), scholar / student (8.7%), farm labourer (6.5%) and herd / dairy worker (3.3%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 27.2% of all Reals, followed by general labourers, building & construction and retail & commerce.
What religion is Real?
Reals were overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, 98.9% of them. The remainder were mostly Presbyterian (1.1%).
