The 1911 Census recorded 841 people named Reddy in Ireland; roughly one in every 5,200 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 415 men and 423 women. (A small number, 3, had no sex recorded.)

Dublin was Reddy country: 32.8% of them (276 people) lived there in 1911. Next came Kilkenny (125), Kildare (66), Wexford (66) and Carlow (56).

The average Reddy in 1911 was 29.3 years old, 29.1 for men and 29.6 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Reddy literacy in 1911
Of the Reddys whose literacy was recorded, 77.4% could both read and write, 3.3% could read but not write, and 19.2% could do neither. The figures were much the same for men and women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.
Reddy common first names
The most common male names were James (61), Patrick, John, Thomas and Michael; the same five names that topped the list nationally. For women it was Mary (81), followed by Margaret, Bridget, Catherine and Kate.
Reddy occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a Reddy's census form was "Scholar"; 16.5% (139) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (10.9%), general labourer (5.6%), farm labourer (4.6%) and domestic servant (3.2%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 16.1% of all Reddys, followed by general labourers, domestic service and retail & commerce.
What religion is Reddy?
Reddys were overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, 94.5% of them. The remainder were mostly Anglican (3.9%).
