The 1911 Census recorded 313 people named Reeves in Ireland; roughly one in every 14,000 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 146 men and 165 women. (A small number, 2, had no sex recorded.)

Dublin was Reeves country: 26.2% of them (82 people) lived there in 1911. Next came Limerick (61), Antrim (42), Wexford (25) and Clare (17).

The average Reeves in 1911 was 29.9 years old, 29.1 for men and 30.5 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Reeves literacy in 1911
Of the Reeveses whose literacy was recorded, 82.8% could both read and write, 2.3% could read but not write, and 14.9% could do neither. Women came out slightly ahead, 84.1% reading and writing against 81.2% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.
Reeves common first names
The most common male names were John (21), James, William, Patrick and George. For women it was Mary (20), followed by Annie, Elizabeth, Margaret and Ellen.
Reeves occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a Reeves's census form was "Scholar"; 15% (47) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (7.3%), domestic servant (4.2%), general labourer (3.5%) and no occupation / dependent (3.2%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 8.6% of all Reeveses, followed by building & construction, domestic service and textiles & clothing.
What religion is Reeves?
The largest religious group among Reeveses was Roman Catholic, at 48.9%. The remainder were mostly Anglican (32.6%), Presbyterian (5.1%), Methodist (3.8%) and Congregationalist (1.6%).
