Rice in 1911 Ireland
The 1911 Census recorded 3,346 people named Rice in Ireland, about 0.076% of everyone living in the country at the time and the 265th most common surname overall. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 1,573 men and 1,768 women. (A small number, 5, had no sex recorded.)
Counties with Rice in Ireland
Down had the largest share of Rices, 19.3% (646 people). Next came Antrim (432), Louth (422), Dublin (409) and Armagh (375).
Rice average age in 1911
The average Rice in 1911 was 29.5 years old, 29.6 for men and 29.4 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Rice literacy in 1911
Of the Rices whose literacy was recorded, 77.3% could both read and write, 4.1% could read but not write, and 18.5% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 79.2% reading and writing against 75.7% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.
Rice common first names
The most common male names were John (197), James, Patrick, Thomas and William. For women it was Mary (241), followed by Margaret, Bridget, Catherine and Elizabeth.
Rice occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a Rice's census form was "Scholar"; 20.7% (692) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (13.4%), general labourer (4.4%), farm labourer (3.7%) and textile worker (3.6%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 17.5% of all Rices, followed by textiles & clothing, general labourers and domestic service.
What religion is Rice?
Rices were predominantly Roman Catholic (83.7%). The remainder were mostly Anglican (10.1%), Presbyterian (3.9%), Methodist (1%) and Congregationalist (0.4%).
