Of the Rilleys whose literacy was recorded, 50.8% could both read and write, 5.1% could read but not write, and 44.1% could do neither. The figures were much the same for men and women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 14.8% of all Rilleys, followed by domestic service, textiles & clothing and general labourers.

Rilleys were predominantly Roman Catholic (75.4%). The remainder were mostly Presbyterian (19.7%) and Anglican (4.9%).
