Men came out slightly ahead, 70.8% reading and writing against 63.4% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common occupation among Roans was farmer, 27.8% of them (25 people). Next came scholar / student (23.3%), domestic servant (7.8%), farm labourer (5.6%) and no occupation / dependent (2.2%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 35.6% of all Roans, followed by domestic service, no occupation / dependent and manufacturing & trades.

Roans were predominantly Roman Catholic (87.8%). The remainder were mostly Anglican (4.4%) and Methodist (1.1%).
