Men came out slightly ahead, 88.2% reading and writing against 80% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were William (11), James, Johnston, Thomas and Alexander. For women it was Elizabeth (4), followed by Mary, Helen, Alice and Annie.

The most common entry on a Robert's census form was "Scholar"; 18.5% (34) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were general labourer (7.1%), shopkeeper / shop assistant / dealer (7.1%), carpenter / joiner (3.8%) and sailor / dock worker (3.8%). Grouped by sector, retail & commerce accounted for 11.4% of all Roberts, followed by general labourers, transport and agriculture.
What religion is Robert?
The largest religious group among Roberts was Anglican, at 34.2%. The remainder were mostly Roman Catholic (25.5%), Presbyterian (23.9%), Methodist (8.7%) and Protestant (4.3%).
